Poverty expanding beyond urban core: Leaders presented new data on issues affecting the region

News story By Mark Ferenchik

South Side neighborhood leader Deborah Macklin said she thought “everything was OK” in Columbus’ suburbs. But the maps and numbers two researchers presented to 250 community leaders at Veterans Memorial yesterday gave her a new perspective. What struck her most was how poverty has spread throughout Franklin County. “I was saddened to see it move out of the urban areas, move into the suburbs,” said Macklin, who leads the civic association in the Alum Crest Acres neighborhood south of Rt. 104 near Rt. 33.

That was among the trends that researchers from the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity at Ohio State University displayed at the Community Development Neighborhood Summit hosted by the Community Development Collaborative of Greater Columbus. Nonprofit groups, foundations and government and community leaders hope to use the information to attack neighborhood problems.

The American Dream of homeownership will be under siege if we take seriously recent government proposals to reform the housing finance market. Government regulators have already taken steps to increase down payments for loans made through Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and the Federal Housing Authority, and are also considering mandatory (and arbitrary) down payment requirements. These moves and other recent government proposals could further racialize our housing and credit markets by effectively disqualifying many lower-income borrowers, including a large share of borrowers of color. Together, the impact of these requirements would erase many of the advances in homeownership achieved over the past 40 years.

WASHINGTON—The day an assassin’s bullet silenced America’s pre-eminent prophet and orator, black boys Shaun and Antawn were likely born to single moms, were growing up in abject poverty and were more likely to end up in prison than in college.

So much has changed since April 4, 1968 when James Earl Ray killed Martin Luther King Jr. So much remain the same.

Three in four black children born in the U.S. this year will be born to a single mom household and such homes often are a life sentence to poverty. Home ownership remains a cruel dream for 56 per cent. Unemployment, death, poverty and disease rates are higher for blacks than white Americans.

One in five African Americans has no health insurance, compared to 12 per cent of whites. Meanwhile, blacks are fatter, eating less healthy and account for nearly half the one million AIDS victims in America, while representing about 12 per cent of the population. Some 60 per cent of all women with AIDS are black.

drew Grant-Thomas, reflecting on the State of Black America in conjunction with the MLK National Memorial dedication.
